How can we prevent drug residues from patient urine getting into the sewer system – and ultimately in groundwater? That question is the focus of the project Mapping opportunities to reduce micropollutant discharge from human and veterinary hospitals.
In a preliminary study researchers have established the loads and concentrations of hospital-specific antimicrobial and anaesthetic pharmaceuticals and contrast media, within the flows of UMC Utrecht. They have also indicated which of these should be prioritised in further research to reduce their discharge into the environment.
